Affiliate marketing sounds like the dream: promote other people’s products, earn passive income, and live the laptop lifestyle. But behind every “overnight success” are often years of trial, error, and painful lessons.
I should know—I lost 3 full years chasing crumbs when I could have been banking solid commissions weekly. The worst part? I didn’t even realize I was making major mistakes until it was too late.
If you’re just starting—or you've been at it a while without consistent results—this post is going to save you time, money, and frustration. I’ll share the 3 costly affiliate mistakes I made, how they slowed me down, and what I’d do differently if I was starting again to
day.
In my first year, I promoted almost anything with an affiliate link—fitness products, crypto offers, random eBooks, even dog food (I don’t even own a dog!).
Why? Because I believed the more I promoted, the more I’d earn. I was wrong.
I had no niche focus, which made my audience confused and disengaged.
I couldn't build authority because my message kept changing.
My traffic was random—and so were my results.
I thought affiliate marketing was a game of quantity. In reality, it’s a game of quality
and trust.
I picked one niche I cared about (helping beginners start online with just a phone).
I built a clear content path: free value → trust → recommended tools.
I only promote 3–5 affiliate tools/services I personally use and stand behind.
That clarity helped me go from 0 to consistent ₦50,000–₦100,000 per month in commissions. People finally started listening because my message was focused.
My early strategy was simple:
> Find an affiliate product, grab the link, and paste it on Facebook or WhatsApp. Done, right?
Wrong again.
People ignored my links. Some even reported them.
I had no way to follow up with people who showed interest.
I wasn’t tracking what worked or what didn’t.
No funnel. No email list. No lead magnet. Just raw links and hope.
That "spray and pray" approach cost me hundreds of leads who clicked but didn’t buy—and I had no system to recover thos
e losses.
I finally learned that affiliate marketing without a system is just gambling.
Here’s the simple funnel I use now:
1. Lead Magnet: I give away a free guide or WhatsApp class (e.g. “How to Start a Blog With Just Your Phone”).
2. Landing Page: Built with MailerLite or Systeme.io, where people opt-in.
3. Email/WhatsApp Follow-Up: I build trust, offer value, and introduce my top affiliate tools.
4. Affiliate Recommendation: Only after building interest and helping peop
le first.
This simple switch—from direct link to full funnel—multiplied my commissions and helped me build a real email list of loyal buyers.
For years, I was addicted to watching tutorials, joining Facebook groups, and downloading “how-to” PDFs. My phone was filled with affiliate guides I never read or implemented.
I got stuck in learning mode, never launching.
I felt like I was “working,” but I wasn’t executing.
I had imposter syndrome—always thinking I wasn’t ready yet.
I had the knowledge, but no results, because I wasn’t applying anything long enough to see s
uccess.
I set a weekly action goal—not just a learning goal.
Example: Publish 3 Facebook posts.
Example: Launch one mini WhatsApp class with affiliate tools.
I test and track results before giving up.
I give myself permission to be a beginner with imperfect execution.
Affiliate success isn’t about perfection. It’s about persistent action and re
al feedback.
Looking back, if I had to start again today with only my phone, here’s exactly what I’d do:
Niche: Helping beginners start a blog or online business with just a phone.
Products:
1. A hosting platform (e.g. Truehost, Bluehost)
2. A funnel builder/email tool (e.g. Systeme.io, MailerLite)
3. A learning platform or software (e.g. Canva Pro
, Copy.ai)
Offer real value with a title like:
“5 Tools That Helped Me Start Earning Online Without a Laptop”
“How to Launch Your First Blog from Your Phone (Step-by-Step)”
Create a simple PDF or class and give it away in exchange for contac
t info.
Use MailerLite or Systeme.io to:
Collect emails or phone numbers
Send follow-up messages
Recommend your affiliate tools with explanations and b
onuses
On Facebook, WhatsApp Status, or your blog, share:
Lessons you’re learning
Mistakes you’re avoiding
Tools you’re using
Success stories (even small wins!)
People follow proof, not perfection.
➤ Share Your Journey, Not Just Products
People connect with stories, not sales pitches. Post like this:
> “I just built my first landing page using only my phone. Took 2 hours, but it’s done! If you’re still stuck, I used this free tool 👉 [your affiliate link]”
That’s 10x more effective than “Sign up for Systeme.io now.”
➤ Offer Bonuses for Signups
Create simple extras like:
A 15-minute WhatsApp walkthrough
A “starter checklist” PDF
3 done-for-you headline templates
Bonuses help you stand out in a crowd of affiliates sharing the same link.
➤ Follow Up with DMs
Many people need a personal nudge. After someone downloads your freebie, follow up:
> “Hey! Just checking if you were able to start building your blog with the guide I sent. Want help choosing a tool?”
This alone has helped me close 10x more sales than
just leaving the link hanging.
I've put together a free PDF guide showing:

A bonus DM script for follow-ups
